I'm actually 90% sure that an Access Point is not necessary since two wireless cards should be able to communicate between each other, but I keep finding these notes on web sites where they say an Access Point is used to connect to a wired LAN, or that it provides a "bridge" from a wired LAN to a wireless LAN.
